Please, Get Rid of Fall Break
Tonight is the last night of the 4 day weekend that is WKU's fall break. Was it fun? I had some good times with my family, true, but it was slightly damped by my 3 high-level exams before it. I know plenty of friends who had to cram in papers and exams in those days as well. And now, my roommate is next to me studying for exams, preparing for papers, and getting ready for a workload after the break.
Thinking back, I can remember this before any Fall beak. Loads of friends always have this workload. It's obvious why of course. Many professors like to try and finish up before the break and put in an exam before we have a long break to forget everything. Other professors will assign papers and presentations afterwards because then we have all of break to get things done, right?
One professor of mine, who gave us an exam before fall break, lamented the break. He had a unique idea: extend Thanksgiving break to make it a week long and get rid of the break. Then professors can try to finish things up before that break, give students a week long break for any final presentations or papers, and spend the week before finals wrapping up the class.
I'm not certain his idea would work. Many professors wouldn't be able to get things done before Thanksgiving break. Honestly, many professors have trouble getting things done before the end of the semester. However, I can't deny that professors tend to cram before long breaks. Whether or not the longer Thanksgiving break would help or hurt is dependent on their style. But I feel without these breaks in the middle of the semester, the professors would be less pressured to cram exams in these shorts amount of time, and maybe, just maybe, we may have a more spread out workload.
